Medications for Hair Loss in Men

Hair loss is a major source of discomfort and poor self-esteem for men. As a hair restoration specialist, Dr. Kothari believes everyone should feel comfortable in their own body. That’s why he offers non-surgical hair loss treatments through the form of medication.

How it works

Medications, specifically minoxidil and finasteride, can either boost circulation or block certain hormones that are linked to hair loss. When started early, the medications are extremely effective. This is especially the case when they are prescribed alongside other hair loss treatments, including PRP and low-level laser therapy.

While there are a variety of hair loss medications on the market, two in particular are most often used:

Minoxidil

Most commonly known as Rogaine, minoxidil is a liquid or foam that is applied directly to the scalp. This opens the blood vessels, improving circulation in the scalp and hair follicles. As a result, hair loss is slowed, stopped, or even reversed.

Finasteride

Also known as Propecia, finasteride is an oral medication that, when taken daily, blocks the production of dihydrotesterone, a hormone related to hair loss. After a few months, patients should see hair loss slowing, with some experiencing new hair growth.
